Graston Technique®
Graston Technique® is a manual, instrument-assisted therapy, which promotes soft tissue mobilization and recovery. At Fox Integrated Healthcare, as part of our integrated health services, we utilize Graston Technique® to help accelerate recovery, release soft tissue adhesions and promote pain relief and improved musculoskeletal functioning.
Conditions That Can Benefit from Graston Technique®
Graston Technique® offers significant benefits for patients struggling with acute, chronic or post-surgical soft tissue dysfunction or discomfort. Common physical issues that respond well to this treatment modality include:
- Tendonitis and tendonosis
- Back and neck pain
- Knee pain and shin splints
- Plantar fasciitis
- Shoulder pain and rotator cuff dysfunction
- Soft tissue injuries
- Post-surgery scarring
- Scar tissue buildup
- Trigger point discomfort
Health Benefits of Graston Technique® Therapy
Graston Technique® offers a variety of healing benefits for individuals suffering from irritating musculoskeletal issues involving scarred or overly tense soft tissue, including:
Accelerated Injury Recovery
Graston Technique® dramatically increases blood flow to injured and dysfunctional tissues, which speeds healing time, promotes functional recovery and reduces injury-related pain.
Tissue Release
Application of Graston Technique® gradually breaks down accumulated scar tissue, painful muscular knots and fascial restrictions, which can dramatically improve range of motion and overall mobility.
Pain Reduction
Injured or dysfunctional soft tissues can produce a significant amount of discomfort, especially if they are inflamed. Graston Technique® promotes substantial blood flow to these tissues while gradually releasing adhesions, eliciting a significant reduction in both acute and chronic pain.
What to Expect
At Fox Integrated Healthcare, our chiropractors — Dr. Derek Fox or Dr. Audrey Kenyon-Fox — are dedicated to gaining a deep understanding of your unique health concerns, so they can determine how to serve you best. To do that, we’ll first meet with you to discuss your unique health concerns and treatment needs.
If you’re a candidate for treatment, we’ll then proceed with a comprehensive physical evaluation, along with a discussion concerning your medical history, lifestyle habits, current limitations and goals for treatment. After reaching a detailed diagnosis, we’ll review the results of your evaluation with you and recommend an individualized course of treatment.
During a Graston Technique®, your practitioner will first apply heat to your treatment area to gently warm the soft tissue and prepare it for the application of the technique. Next, your chiropractor will utilize specialized Graston Technique® instruments to manually apply gentle pressure to the treatment area while using cross-friction massage techniques to manipulate the soft tissues within it.
Because this technique promotes increased blood flow and tissue mobilization, we may recommend the treatment as part of an integrated approach to injury recovery, or as a component of your routine chiropractic care. Your specific length of treatment depends heavily on your individual concerns and response to treatment.
Frequently Asked Questions
During a Graston Technique® treatment, you may feel slight discomfort, but treatment duration is typically quite brief, usually around 30 to 60 seconds for each area. Pink- or red-hued skin is completely normal and expected following the treatment, simply because the technique dramatically increases circulation within each treatment area.
Yes, absolutely — as long as your chiropractor determines you are a candidate for the therapy. The techniques and instruments we use to perform Graston Technique® therapy have been widely used for over 25 years. The technique is a routine therapy in a variety of treatment settings, including those for high-level professional athletes who cannot afford extensive downtime from their physically demanding professions.
