Chiropractic Adjustments
Structural misalignments within your body have the potential to generate a wide variety of physical and systemic issues that extend far beyond your spine. Just as any building requires a stable, aligned foundation for lasting structural integrity, your body is much the same — that’s where chiropractic adjustments at Fox Integrated Health come in.
Naturally, your spine experiences a variety of forces on a daily basis, which contribute to structural misalignments of your vertebrae. Chiropractic adjustments deliver non-invasive, gentle, and controlled joint manipulation to return misaligned vertebrae to their normal positioning, thereby improving mobility, nerve function and overall well-being.
What Conditions Can Benefit from a Chiropractic Adjustment?
A wide variety of health conditions can benefit from chiropractic adjustments, including:
- Back and neck pain
- Nerve pain and loss of function
- Headaches
- Joint pain and loss of mobility
- Whiplash
- Sciatica
- Injuries
- Chronic musculoskeletal pain
Health Benefits of Chiropractic Adjustments
If you’re struggling with chronic pain, limited mobility, poor posture or other irritating physical or internal symptoms, chiropractic adjustments offer a variety of wellness benefits, including:
Pain Reduction
When your spinal vertebrae are misaligned, they place excess pressure on the nerves that extend from your spinal cord and weave throughout your system. Often, this abnormal nerve compression leads to sensations of pain in certain areas throughout the body. As we gradually bring your spine back into its proper position, we relieve pressure on compressed spinal nerves, which significantly reduces and, in many cases, eliminates acute and chronic discomfort.
Mobility Improvement
Moving is often difficult with a misaligned spine, and for many individuals, even everyday motions necessitate alterations to normal daily movement patterns. Your body is designed to move in specific patterns that facilitate overall well-being, but when you must change those patterns due to pain or mobility loss, over time, those changes gradually become programmed. You might notice this phenomenon as limping, hunching or unintentional guarding during certain movements.
Enhanced Nerve Signaling
When misaligned vertebrae put pressure on your spinal nerves, those nerves cannot transmit signals from your central nerve system efficiently. This phenomenon may cause you to experience pain, tingling, numbness and even diminished systemic functioning. By bringing your spinal column into proper alignment, we relieve pressure on the nerves that stem from your spine, which allows them to resume normal, healthy functioning.
What To Expect With Chiropractic Adjustments
At Fox Integrated Healthcare, the first step in formulating your individualized treatment protocol is your initial consultation, during which you’ll discuss your medical history, current health concerns, and treatment goals. Your chiropractor will also perform a comprehensive physical exam, which may include a series of x-rays to locate structural shifts within your spine.
After your evaluation, Dr. Derek Fox or Dr. Audrey Kenyon-Fox will take time to discuss the findings of your exam with you and explain your treatment options going forward. Using the results of your evaluation, your chiropractor will then design an individualized treatment protocol to gradually bring your spine back into proper alignment through a series of chiropractic adjustments.
If you’re struggling with acute symptoms, your chiropractor may wish to perform treatment multiple times per week until your symptoms begin to resolve. Depending on your unique case, your body’s response to treatment and the expert opinion of your doctor, your treatment frequency should decrease over time.
Chiropractic Adjustments: Frequently Asked Questions
Chiropractic care is recognized in the medical community as one of the safest, most natural and conservative therapies for the treatment of musculoskeletal abnormalities and discomfort. That said, depending on the individual, any treatment has the potential to produce adverse effects. During your initial evaluation, you and your chiropractor will discuss any concerns you may have in depth.
As for the adjustment itself, the typical “popping” or “cracking” sounds you may hear are simply an indication that pressure is shifting within the joint. During the adjustment, you should not feel discomfort, although patients often report feeling a pronounced “release” of tension and pressure within the joints and surrounding musculature. After your adjustment, you may feel mild soreness, not unlike the sensation you experience after a good workout. Mild stiffness, soreness or low-level aching typically indicate that your body is in the process of incorporating your recent adjustment. We encourage practicing gentle, low-impact exercise such as walking to help the changes elicited by your recent adjustment settle into place.
Your length and frequency of treatment is highly individualized and depends on your unique concerns, response to treatment, lifestyle habits and a variety of other factors. If you’re struggling with an acute concern, your frequency of treatment will typically be higher toward the beginning of your protocol and will gradually decrease as your body responds and adjusts. Maintenance treatments at regular weekly, bi-weekly or monthly intervals will help maintain appropriate spinal alignment and encourage optimal musculoskeletal function.
