Health Benefits of Sports Chiropractic Treatment
Whether you’re a professional athlete, a weekend warrior or an everyday exerciser, sports chiropractic care can keep you feeling and performing your best. Routine treatments offer active individuals a variety of health benefits, including:
Injury Healing and Prevention
A misaligned musculoskeletal system triggers imbalance and dysfunction in your muscles, joints, tendons and ligaments, leading to injury and decreased functioning. As we restore normal alignment, we gradually correct structural abnormalities and increase blood flow to injured tissues, which promotes expedited healing. When your musculoskeletal system is properly aligned and fully functional, your risk of future injury decreases significantly.
Mobility and Range of Motion Improvement
As an athlete, when your spine or peripheral joints become misaligned, you naturally compensate for the changes by altering your movement patterns. Eventually, these abnormal movement patterns can cause muscular imbalances, which further impede mobility, range of motion and overall performance. By bringing your joints back into proper alignment and addressing soft tissue problems, we gradually restore muscular and structural balance, which encourages greater range of motion and overall mobility.
Performance and Coordination Improvement
As we bring your spine and peripheral joints into proper alignment, we relieve pressure and tension in the surrounding musculature, which allows for increased movement control and coordination. Relieving pressure on spinal discs and nerves also encourages performance improvement by allowing your nerves, ligaments, tendons, muscles and joints to communicate with one another efficiently, encouraging synergistic functioning.
What to Expect from Chiropractic Care
At Fox Integrated Health, the first step in our comprehensive treatment process is your initial evaluation, during which you and your chiropractor will discuss your current needs and concerns. You’ll also discuss your medical history, injury history, lifestyle habits and training, so we can gain a deep understanding of unique concerns.
As part of your evaluation, you’ll also undergo a comprehensive physical examination, which allows us to locate structural shifts requiring correction. After your evaluation, your chiropractor — Dr. Derek Fox or Dr. Audrey Kenyon-Fox — will review the results of your exam and discuss those findings with you in depth. Your chiropractor will then develop a comprehensive, individualized plan of care to restore proper musculoskeletal functioning and improve your overall physical performance.
Sports Chiropractic: Frequently Asked Questions
After each session, we highly recommend taking time to relax, which helps your body incorporate your recent adjustment. To maintain the integrity of your adjustment, you should avoid heavy training after your treatment, as well as any rapid, sudden movements. Ideally, you should wait several hours to one full day after your treatment to resume high-intensity training. In the meantime, we encourage low-impact activities such as walking.
While traditional chiropractic adjustments are designed to treat the general population, sports chiropractic is an advanced specialty within the chiropractic field, requiring years of specialized training. Sports chiropractors train extensively in the evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and management of sports-specific injuries, rehabilitation and emergency treatment. We take an integrative health approach to sports chiropractic at our clinic and often incorporate various treatment modalities to elicit lasting performance improvements.
